Question
Hi
I am a former problem drinker that has managed to reduce my binges to once a month or less.
I am in my early fifties. For the last couple of years I have noticed I get extremely bloated with severe abdominal distension for a couple days after a binge.I dont go overboard with the food so I dont think its that.
I have seen my doctor about this and he said my liver tested normal and it was not enlarged, but it was possible I was having a reaction to the alcohol as I do have I.B.S.
In your experiance have you ever come across this?
Answer
Dear Terry
The body reacts in various ways to alcohol overdoses. Because alcohol is toxic to the body, the body reacts however it can to protect itself. Alcohol attacks many organs other than the brain and the liver. The pancreas, adrenal glands and digestive system can temporarily swell in reaction to the acidity and sugar of alcohol. I am not a doctor so I can't be definitive about what specifically causes your swelling other than I am not surprised. Just know that alcohol is an acid and extremely destructive to your body. Good luck.
