Salt and drinks with sweeteners lead to Kidney Deterioration

The use of foods high in salt or artificially sweetened beverages leads to an increased risk of diseases associated with deterioration of renal function, U.S. researchers reported at the Annual Congress of the Society of Nephrology in San Diego, California.

American specialists are interested in the impact of sodium and sugar-sweetened beverage sweeteners renal function. To do this, they studied the health and habits of more than three thousand women. The study showed that higher levels of salt intake and artificially sweetened beverages leads to a deterioration of the kidneys. Thus, the researchers found that women whose kidneys were in very good condition, ate very little salt.

Within the same research, experts have found that two or more servings of these drinks with sugar substitutes per day accelerates the deterioration of the kidneys. In this same connection between the decline in kidney function and beverages, in which adds a sugar, were found. The specified relationship existed even after the researchers took into account all other factors affecting the renal function, including age, caloric value meals, obesity, hypertension, diabetes, smoking, physical activity, presence of cardiovascular disease. The mechanism causing the observed relation between reduced kidney function and intake of artificial sweeteners, has not been previously studied, and therefore requires further research, scientists have noticed.
