It has long been suggested that normal levels of folate and natural forms of folic acid in pregnant women go hand in hand with the development of a healthy nervous system of the fetus.
In the study, experts found that low concentration of folic acid in pregnant women causes problems of attention and contributes to hyperactivity in children 7 - 9 years. The study was published in the British journal The Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry.
Scientists believe that the results of medical observations support the hypothesis that maternal nutrition during pregnancy is critical for the development of a child's body, but the lack of any vitamins has potentially dangerous consequences for child health in the future.
Pediatricians have found that children born to mothers with folate deficiency had significantly smaller head circumference at birth - this feature shows a slow prenatal growth of the brain. Doctors warn that a lack of folic acid carries various behavioral disorders for infants, including problems of social interaction with peers and learning problems at an older age. Conclusions worrying experts, since many women during pregnancy neglect taking vitamins, especially among people with low social status.
